If you bought Office through the Microsoft Store

If you bought Office through the Microsoft Store, you can enter your product key there.

  1. Go to www.microsoftstore.com. In the upper right-hand corner, select Sign in and enter the user ID and password you used to buy Office.

  2. After you sign in, select your name in the upper right-hand corner, and then select Order History.

  3. Locate the Office one-time purchase or individual Office app, and then select Install Office to view your product key (this doesn't actually install Office).

  4. Select Install Office again in the window where the product key appears.

  5. On the Hi. Let's get your Office page, follow the prompts to associate your product key with your Microsoft account and start the installation process.

If you bought Office through Microsoft HUP

  1. Start any Office app, such as Word, Visio, or Project, depending on your purchase.

  2. In the Sign in to set up Office screen, select I don't want to sign in or create an account (it's a small link at the bottom of the window).

For help, see Get help installing Office through Microsoft HUP

My new Windows 10 PC came with Office but I can't find a product key

If you see a Let's get started screen with options to try, buy, or activate Office, this means that Office is installed on your new PC as a 1-month trial of Office 365 Home. You won't receive a product key from your PC manufacturer unless you paid for an Office product key card. Instead, you can start a trial of Office 365 Home, or buy Office.

If you paid for an Office product to be included on your new Windows 10 PC, a digital product key is transmitted to your PC when you activate Windows 10. You won't receive a printed product key. Instead, you'll see a message similar to the following when you start Word (or any Office app).

I bought a product key card but there's no key on it

If you bought an Office product key card, you might need to carefully scratch off a silver foil coating on the back of your product key card to reveal your product key. If you damage the key while scratching off the foil coating, see I lost or damaged my product key.

Tip: A product key card might also contain bar codes and other groups of letters and numbers, but the product key will always be shown in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

Office is prompting me for a product key

Use your Microsoft account, not your product key, to install and activate Office and individually purchased Office apps, such as Project, Visio, Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Sign in to install Office

Bookmark the site below so you always know where to go to install Office.

Sign in to activate Office

If an Office app prompts you to activate, sign in with your Microsoft account instead of a product key.

Use the right Microsoft account

Make sure you sign in with the Microsoft account that you used to buy Office.

Note: If you bought a new, unused Office 365 product key card to renew an Office 365 subscription or to buy your trial, you can enter that product key if Office prompts you for it. You can also enter the product key at www.office.com/setup.

There are a few exceptions where you'll need to do something other than sign in.

  • If you bought Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional, or Project Professional through your employer's Microsoft HUP benefit, you'll need your product key to install Office on a PC. To locate your product key online, see Get your HUP product key.

  • If you're using a volume license version of Office Professional Plus at work, you'll need to contact your admin for a product key.

  • If you see a yellow or red banner in an Office app that says SUBSCRIPTION EXPIRED, you must renew your Office 365 subscription to keep using Office. For help, see Renew Office 365 for home.

  • If Office came pre-installed on your new device, and you see a yellow or red banner in an Office app that says PRODUCT NOTICE Most of the features of <app> have been disabled because it hasn't been activated, you must start a new Office 365 Home trial, sign in with a Microsoft account that's associated with Office, or buy Office. For help, see Activate Office.

  • If you bought Office Professional Plus online, see Can I buy a product key? or, if your product key isn't working, see My Office product key isn't working.

Do I need a product key to reinstall Office?

No, you don't. Just go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page and sign in using the Microsoft account that you used to buy Office. We can help if you forgot your Microsoft account or password.

Note: You need a product key to reinstall Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional, or Project Professional through Microsoft HUP. For help, see Get help installing Office through Microsoft HUP.

Can I change my product key?

Yes, you can change the product key for Office Home & Business, Office Home & Student, Office Professional, and individually purchased Office apps. To learn how, see Change your Office product key

You can also switch your Office license if you buy a different version of Office. For example, if you have Office Home & Business and decide to subscribe to Office 365, you can switch your existing install from Office Home & Business to Office 365. To learn how, see Switch your Office license.

Can I view my product key in Office?

No, you can't. For security reasons, the full product key isn't displayed within Office.

Instead, for Office 365, Office 2019, and Office 2016, you can view the Microsoft account that Office belongs to. This account takes the place of your product key and can be used to reinstall Office from the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page and to activate Office.

To view the Microsoft account that Office belongs to, open a document in Word (or any Office app) and go to File > Account. Look for the email address after Belongs to below the product name.

Can I view my product key online?

If you bought Office 365 or Office Home & Student

Your product key isn't displayed online. If Office is prompting you for a product key, you can sign in using the Microsoft account that you used to buy and download Office.

If you bought Office Home & Business, Office Professional, and individual Office apps

Product keys for one-time purchases of Office Home & Business, Office Professional, and individual Office apps are available at the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page. However, you don't need a product key to reinstall or activate these products. If these products are prompting you for a product key, you can sign in using the Microsoft account that you used to buy and download Office.

If you still want to view your product key, here's how:

  1. Go to the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page and sign in, if prompted.

  2. Select View product key. Note that this product key won't match the product key shown on an Office product key card or in the Microsoft Store for the same purchase. This is normal.

If you bought Office through Microsoft HUP

If you bought Office Professional Plus, Visio Professional, or Project Professional through your employer's Microsoft HUP benefit, you can also view your product key online on your Order Details page. For help, see Get your HUP product key.

Can I view my key in the Microsoft Store?

If you bought Office Home & Student, Office Home & Business, Office Professional, or individual Office apps from the Microsoft Store and you haven't installed them yet, you can also view their product keys and install them from the Microsoft Store.

Here's how to view your product key in the Microsoft Store:

Note that this product key won't match the product key shown in the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page. This is normal.

My product keys don't match

This is normal. The Office product key shown on the Microsoft account, Services & subscriptions page will always be different than the product key that's shown on a product key card or email receipt. They are two different types of keys, even though they use the same format.

Can I buy a product key?

It depends on what you're trying to do.

  • To buy a brand new copy of Office, or start a new Office 365 subscription, you can buy an Office product key card from a retailer. You can redeem your key at www.office.com/setup to set up your Microsoft account and install Office. You can also buy a digital download directly from the Microsoft Store at www.microsoftstore.com. You'll receive a product key if you buy a one-time purchase Office or individual Office apps, but you won't need or receive a product key for Office 365.

  • To renew your Office 365 subscription, you can buy an Office 365 product key card from a retailer and redeem the key at www.office.com/setup. You can also renew your subscription online, without a product key, at www.office.com/renew.

  • If Office is prompting you for a product key, and you want to buy a product key to activate Office, it's better to uninstall your current version of Office and then buy and install a new version of Office from the Microsoft Store. This way you can be sure that Office will activate successfully.

My Office product key isn't working

If you see an error message when you redeem your product key at Office.com/setup, see Get help with product key errors on Office.com/setup.

If your Office product key doesn’t work, or has stopped working, you should contact the seller and request a refund. If you bought a product key separate from the software, it’s very possible the product key was stolen or otherwise fraudulently obtained, and subsequently blocked for use. Unfortunately, there are many dishonest sellers who offer stolen, abused, or otherwise unauthorized Microsoft product keys for sale. Sometimes these product keys are printed on counterfeit labels or cards with a download link to Microsoft software, and sometimes they’re distributed with software media that is unauthorized for resale, such as promotional media, original equipment manufacturer reinstallation media, or other Microsoft program-specific media.

Contact support about my product key

If you’ve followed the guidance in this article and still need help, visit our Microsoft support page for assistance.

If you're preparing to reinstall a program or an operating system (like a clean install of Windows), you'll need to find your unique product key (CD key) or serial number before continuing.

Normally this product key is located on the original install disc, or maybe in your order confirmation email. If you've lost your product key, you can often find it in the Windows Registry but this can be difficult, or sometimes even impossible, to do. Fortunately, there are many free key finder programs available to help.

Please read our Key Finder Programs FAQ for lots of helpful information. This isn't an easy topic, especially if you're new to it.

Below are the top 21 free key finder programs. We also keep a list of commercial key finder programs but it's highly recommended that you exhaust the options below before paying for one.

SterJo Key Finder is another key finder that finds product keys for over 500 games and software on either the local Windows install (your computer) or a remote one.

SterJo Key Finder is a great way to find product keys because the program is easy to read, you can search through the results, and it supports a huge number of products.

Unfortunately, SterJo Key Finder found two different product keys for one of the programs on my computer, which makes it hard to recommend above some of the other programs from this list.

What We Like

  • Lets you save the product keys it finds

  • Runs in portable mode

Finds Keys for Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 & 2003, Windows XP, and Windows 2000.

Though the other Windows 8 compatible programs from this list were able to find the product key for my installation, MSKeyViewer Plus wasn't able to do so.

I'd probably pick several other key finders before MSKeyViewer Plus, but if you're having trouble finding a specific key, give MSKeyViewer a try.

MSKeyViewer Plus may find a key for your Windows 10 installation, but it's probably going to be incorrect just like mine was.

  • Shows keys for Windows 10 and other newer (and older) Windows OSs

  • Identifies Microsoft Office product keys

  • Shows product keys for a few non-Microsoft programs

  • Includes a wealth of hardware information

What We Don't Like

  • Can seem cluttered if you're not interested in all the other results

  • The initial auto-scan might take a while to complete

  • You can't export just the product key information to a file

Free PC Audit is a system information tool that shows not only hardware information but also product keys for several Windows and Microsoft Office installs.

It's very small, completely portable, scans automatically, and lets you easily copy out product keys.

Finds Keys for Operating Systems: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and probably older versions as well.

Finds Keys for Other Software: Microsoft Office 2013, Office 2010, 2007, Office 2003, and likely some older versions, as well as some Adobe and Corel software.

Because there's so much other information shown in Free PC Audit, it can seem very cluttered if you're using it just for finding product keys.

Windows Product Key Viewer

  • Supports recent and old versions of Windows

  • Results are clear and easy to read

  • Shows additional information beyond the product key

  • No need to install the program (it's portable)

  • The key can be copied to the clipboard

What We Don't Like

  • When printing or exporting, you can't save just the product key; all the other information is included as well

Windows Product Key Viewer is another key finder program that shows the product key for several versions of Windows.

You can easily copy the product key out of the program, print the keys, or save them to a file. Additional details are shown as well, such as the product ID, install date, and build number.

Finds Keys for Operating Systems: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows 98, Windows 95, and Windows Server 2008/2003

Due to Windows Product Key Viewer's small size and portability, it's a great product key finder to store on a flash drive.

Lazesoft Windows Key Finder

What We Like

  • Finds the Windows 10 key and keys for other newer and older Windows OSs

  • Locates Microsoft Office keys

  • Very portable (small download size and no installation necessary)

  • The program interface is extremely easy to use

  • The key can be saved to a file or the clipboard

What We Don't Like

  • Some MS Office keys can't be found even though they're listed as being supported

  • Doesn't show keys for non-Microsoft programs

Lazesoft Windows Key Finder is another free program that can find the product key for many Windows installs and Microsoft Office versions.

The program is small, completely portable, and simple to read. You can print or save the product keys to a file.

Finds Keys for Operating Systems: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2012/2008/2003.

Finds Keys for Other Software: Microsoft Office 2016, 2013, Office 2010, Office 2007, Office 2003, and Office 2000.

Though Microsoft Office 2013 and 2016 is supported, I was unable to use Lazesoft Windows Key Finder to locate those keys in Windows 10, Windows 8, or Windows 7.

Product Key Informer

What We Like

  • Finds product keys for some versions of Windows and MS Office

  • The keys are easy to read

  • Lets you save the keys to the clipboard

  • Able to search the network for product keys on other computers

  • Entirely portable (no installation necessary)

What We Don't Like

  • Supports older software only

  • Doesn't let you back up the product keys to a file

Product Key Informer is another free product key finder program but it finds product keys for only a few Microsoft programs other than the operating system.

Finds Keys for Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows ME, and Windows 98.

Finds Keys for Other Software: Microsoft Office 2007, Office 2003, and Office XP.

Honestly, I didn't care much for Product Key Informer. I think it was the baked-in fields for specific product keys that bothered me. It's a waste of screen real estate and confirms that the program's product key finding abilities are very limited.

Windows Product Key Finder

What We Like

  • Locates keys for Windows 7 and older Windows versions

  • The download size is small

  • You don't have to install the program

  • The key can be copied

  • Shows other useful OS information

What We Don't Like

  • Although the software technically works in newer versions of Windows, the product key it finds is not correct

  • Doesn't show the key automatically

  • You can't save the product key to a file

Windows Product Key Finder is only 80 KB in size, is completely portable, and quickly shows the product key.

Finds Keys for Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

When compared to other key finder programs from this list, Windows Product Key Finder is extremely basic and void of support for anything but the Windows OS. Also, while it is able to open in Windows 8 and 10, the product key it finds is inaccurate.

Abelssoft's MyKeyFinder

What We Like

  • Works in Windows 10 and older Windows versions

  • Shows keys for MS Office programs and some non-Microsoft applications

  • You can block areas of the registry where you don't want to scan for keys

  • Multiple ways to save the keys

  • You can find keys quickly by searching through the results

What We Don't Like

  • Takes a while to scan for product keys

  • Might show keys for programs that don't use product keys

  • Not all features are free; you have to pay to enable them

  • Asks you to donate each time you close the software

MyKeyFinder lets you save product keys to a PDF file or to the clipboard. You can also send one or more keys to a printer.

You can search through the list of install keys it finds and even blacklist registry keys to avoid finding serials in those locations.

Finds Keys for Operating Systems: Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.

Finds Keys for Other Software: VMware, some Microsoft Office products, and others.

While testing MyKeyFinder, I found that a scan takes much longer to complete than any of the other programs from this list. Also, it found keys for programs (hundreds of them) that don't actually use serials, as well a key for Microsoft Office 2013 that wasn't correct.

Important Product Key Finder Information (Windows Product Keys)

If your system was purchased with Microsoft Windows pre-installed and you have not reinstalled it or upgraded it yourself, a key finder may only find the generic product key that your PC manufacturer used to install Windows. This product key may not work when attempting to reinstall Windows. In this case, you must use the unique product key that is on the sticker attached to your computer case.

If you can't locate your product key sticker you'll need to request a new Windows product key.
